Dumping incoherent energy into a junction's boundary geometry throws it into runaway desynchronisation. It cannot destroy the network, but it makes a junction unusable until it damps back to equilibrium over months. At the close of Spent Light it is used to seal the Span behind the Endurance — at the cost of a life.

When a ship is cut off from the junction network — no relay, no ledger, no fix — she navigates the oldest way there is: from her own logged motion, error growing in the count, no magic correction. It is the central predicament of the Endurance in Spent Light, and the source of the book's title image.

No fold lands exactly where the maths says. The residual error — the drift envelope — is a measure of a ship's precision (e.g. the Erika's 0.024% versus the Persistent Error's 0.012%). It is navigational. It is not to be confused with the other number that won't go away. As navigation and node-network telemetry improved across the eras, traversals grew steadily more precise.

The ISA's early navigation program, where the Brief originates in 2123. It trained navigators in quarterly cohorts and carried its records forward into ISNI at that body's founding.

ISCA's paradigm-shift design: twice a T-class, built around a forward 84-metre harmonic array with four secondary arrays at the quarter-points, a deep keel, and dual Seam chambers. The Resolute is first of class; the Resolute II is its Architect-residual hybrid.

Directorate Order 2192/07-G-441 created the grade of Captain for exploration-class command, effective at Marcus Cole's acceptance signature on Day 19 of the Resolute's first deployment. Before it, chair-holders were Commanders.

A ship's harmonic array tunes to the Seam boundary at 1420.40575 MHz and opens the fold. Arrays are described by generation (2nd-gen through 4th-gen) and by stack count (two-stack, four-stack); a larger, more sophisticated array means cleaner navigation and longer reach. Every discharge also feeds the hidden cost.

The deep-frontier-era authority that handles contact protocols and flags anomalous junctions (via its Temporal Intelligence arm, ISCA-TI). The Long Watch is its era; the rank of Captain is created within it in 2192.

The body that fields the Meridian-class deep explorers, including the Endurance. By 2240 the deep-frontier mandate has grown into a standing fleet far from home.

The institutional authority of the mid-Drift era that licenses traversal and operates institutional vessels (like the Erika). Distinct from the private operators it regulates.
In First Run, Running Dark
The training and navigation body of the Drift era, successor to EATNP. Its continuous cohort numbering runs from Cohort 1 (~2123) onward; Idris Fasola's Cohort 12 graduates in 2140.
Junctions are the ports of the Seam: the fixed points the network connects. Some are catalogued and instrumented; some are anomalous and flagged for review. A ship folds from one junction to another. The charted network of them is the navigable, ledgered half of the universe.

A core Nhál concept (korr, a weight owed, + vesh, the standing-quiet): a grief held, witnessed, not rushed. Naral transmits her own korrvesh to the Orun through the pressure-rig — and that, not any sentence, is what they answer. See the full Nhál lexicon on the Alien Languages page.
In The Wrong Side
A massive, modular deep explorer whose hull sections mate at structural collars and can be struck and refitted in dock — the same collars an act of sabotage exploits. Carries ~240 across stacked habitation decks and makes planetfall only by lander. Sister ships: Resolute III, Endeavour, Fortitude, Tenacity.

The infrastructure that joined the frontier to home: seam-coupled relay nodes positioned at junction margins, giving near-real-time communication across the network with only a small honest lag that scales with distance and relay depth. It runs in two layers — a transport layer that carries private and encrypted traffic, and a public, append-only ledger whose records can never be altered or forged. Each node writes its own position and junction state into the shared medium. First fielded in the Long Watch era and multiplying ever since.

A communications stack that mediates between human language and an alien grammar at roughly one exchange every 30–90 seconds. Every translation carries a confidence percentage; below 70% it is marked unreliable. There is no universal translator in this universe — only specialist protocol work and time. The later node-coupled v2.0 device is its successor.
In Bright Horizon
A commercial operator holding roughly 60% of traversal licences in the Drift era. Its lived-in commercial vessels (the Karl Vidar Pedersen) are the canonical contrast to ISNA's institutional ships.

In The Long Charter
The standard traversal vessel — compact, slender, observation-deck-equipped, 6 decks. The institutional Erika and the commercial Karl Vidar share the class but not the culture; the third-generation Persistent Error is its four-stack successor.
also: the Anchored
A political and operational movement that holds research at parity with the Brief on the documented harm of the Seam. They steal institutional tech, run a clandestine patchwork-hull fleet, and still cross the Seam — to stop others crossing it. The mainline holds the 2127 Bergen Charter absolutely: act against hardware, never against persons. Splinter cells reject that patience, and the mainline disowns them. Priya Okafor's six novels are their literary canon; they call the Wound the Drag, or the Cost.
First in Seeded across the franchise
Junction-resident, with no physical form ever encountered; they 'speak' by modifying the topology of local spacetime, and they left behind functional technology long after their disappearance. Their residual tech rebuilds the Resolute II. Mathematical bootstrap contact was established 2172–2180.

A diverged, self-engineered human civilization that exterminated the far pocket's indigenous Orun. Their envoy Maric Tann courts the Endurance's crew before the truth surfaces. When the Endurance crosses home, Tann sees that the home network is alive and rich — and resolves to follow.

A continuous, secret document held by only thirty to forty named individuals across centuries (EATNP → ISNI → ISA-CID → ISCA → DSIA → the Accord). It records the institutional knowledge of the Wound — and the decision to suppress it. No franchise protagonist holds it.

A small, pre-industrial human culture on an impossible temperate world in the far pocket — eroded tongue, flood-myth, warp-weighted looms. A counterweight to the Ascendant: humans who endured by living gently rather than consuming. Eli Sarno musters out to stay among them.
A spent network in heat-death: junctions guttering, the floor climbing, stars dimming toward a dead heart. It shares no coordinates with the home network, which is why it cannot be drawn on the celestial map. The Endurance is flung here by sabotage and finds her own way back by dead reckoning.

The Wound's fingerprint in the instruments: a free-energy / entropy floor that runs above engineering specification and rises measurably with every fold and every transmission. Crews log it 'within tolerance' and file it as noise. The careful reader watches it accumulate across books the characters cannot yet name.

Every mathematical bootstrap has failed; PMK confidence is zero; it is classified an active threat. It drives the multi-front crisis of 2220 — the crisis the Nhál fleet ends without a word of explanation. Most fields on its file end in UNDETERMINED.

In First Contact
Communities of human Seam-traversers stranded long ago and grown a long way from their root. In the Long Watch era they communicate by Seam-modulation — the v2.0 translator cannot read them. By 2240 two Nhál delegates, Naral (she) and Saen (he), serve aboard the Endurance, and the Nhál keep an oral language alongside their older signalling. In 2220 a Nhál fleet intervened, unannounced, to drive off the Hostile.

In First Contact, Dead Reckoning
Vast, slow, grief-anchored beings who communicate by pressure and vibration; the translator fails on them entirely. The Endurance's crew first misreads them as the threat, then learns they are an indigenous remnant being exterminated. Their leader — 'the Keeper' — seals the Span behind the crew at the cost of his life.

Not a wormhole and not faster-than-light travel — something else. A connection in the structure of space that a correctly-tuned instrument can open and cross in no subjective time. The first signal arrived 14 March 2047; the first accidental human traversal followed in 2071. Every story in the franchise runs on it, and almost no one understands what it actually is.

In The Signal, The Quiet Mathematics
The one way out of the spent pocket, known only to the Orun — and the way home is also the way in. The Endurance crosses it in 2245; the Keeper seals it behind her with a boundary cascade, but only for months. What the crew opens lets something follow.
An aggressive presence stationed at anomalous junctions in the deep-frontier era; the Resolute's first engagement, at Junction 44-K, is against them, and they recur through the early Long Watch. ISCA carries them as TVA-S/2192; the institutional reading — that they guard Architect-residual sites rather than hunt — takes years to settle. (Not to be confused with the Anchorage's breakaway splinter cells.)
In Shakedown, The Deep Frontier
First contact 2152, conducted through mathematical proofs for fifteen years before conversational exchange became possible. Their grammar is compressed mathematical-symbolic structure; the PMK renders only an approximation.
First in The Drift era
Anaerobic, low-light adapted, ~320-year lifespans. They communicate by pulsed electromagnetic signal at about one-fortieth of human conversational pace, and move in formations — like the 'Kelvath-shorel' — that do not map to human geometry. They arrive coordinated in 2220.

Every Seam traversal carries a thermodynamic cost. The universe is dying faster because people use the Seam — not a metaphor, a mechanism. It is felt across the whole franchise as an unexplained 'floor' that climbs and won't zero, and is named outright only later (in The Ruins, where Marcus Cole learns ISCA has known since 2123). The Anchored call it the Drag or the Cost; the Briefed call it the Mechanism.

Subjectively instantaneous (0–4 minutes for the crew); objectively a discontinuity. A traversal carries a navigational error (drift) and a thermodynamic cost that the institutions track and suppress. To 'commit' a fold is to spend something a damaged ship may not get back.

Operational around 2215, the v2.0 does not 'know' a language — it couples to the node network and runs the heavy work on a shared neural model (the hive), keeping species profiles in local cache for when the link is thin. It cancels the room, isolates the one signal that matters, and renders speech in near-real-time, getting better at a tongue the moment the hive learns its pattern. It still approximates or drops concepts with no human shape, and some species have no discrete language for it to infer at all.
