The Long Watch
A new captain inherits the best ship in the fleet — and a frontier that answers to no protocol.
When his commanding officer's diagnosis forces her out, Marcus Cole takes the chair at forty-two and spends the next twenty-eight years pushing past the edge of the charted dark: into the Splinter, into what the Architects left behind, and finally into first contact itself — with the cost of every discharge quietly mounting behind him.
Faster-paced than The Drift, with the same hard-SF integrity — ship engagements that carry real thermodynamic weight, and a captain who shows what he feels and a crew that trusts him for it. Action register: 7/10.

Book 5: First Contact — Available now. Marcus turns 70. The Vekhol and Nhál both arrive in the same year. The chair passes to Hana Whitfield. Twenty-eight years at the deep frontier complete.
Book One: Shakedown (2192–93)
Marcus Cole is field-promoted to captain when Commander Vasquez's diagnosis forces her retirement. The Resolute's first deployment surveys Junction 44-K — a geometrically anomalous sub-junction flagged by ISCA-TI. The Splinter faction is stationed there. First engagement. Ensign Aditya Khatri is killed in the climax. Marcus violates protocol to save the crew. The institution reprimands him. The crew trusts him.
Book Two: The Deep Edge (2195–96)
The Resolute finds an Architect-residual construct at Junction 44-F — not hostile, not safe, not dormant. The crew establishes first sustained observational protocols. Marcus's mother Adaeze dies between B1 and B2; this is the wound he carries forward.
Book Three: The Deep Frontier (2200–01)
Junction-23 is the trap they cannot break. Multi-vessel engagement. The Resolute is lost. Seven crew killed. The survivors bring everyone else home in a lifeboat. Marcus retires briefly; ISCA persuades him to return.
Book Four: The Ruins (2204)
A new ship: Resolute II, rebuilt from wreckage and Architect-residual technology. Two artefacts found at a ruined homeworld, both dated sixty years in the future. Same story, different senders. Marcus reads the institutional cost the Brief has been keeping from him.
Book Five: First Contact (2220)
The series closes. Twenty-eight years at the deep frontier. Multi-front crisis. The Vekhol arrive coordinated. The Nhál arrive unannounced. Marcus retires at 70. The chair passes to Hana Whitfield.
