R. S. Breed

R.S. Breed has been building the Fracture Cosmology universe for twenty years. What started as a hard SF thought experiment (what if the mechanism connecting distant points in spacetime had a cost no one was measuring?) grew into a multi-series franchise spanning eight centuries, multiple alien civilisations, and the slow human reckoning with a universe that turns out to be far more structured than anyone wanted it to be.

The franchise draws from hard science fiction's commitment to rigour, literary fiction's attention to interiority, and the pacing of the best adventure writing. Every series is a complete story with no prior reading required — and most books stand alone within them. The universe is the reward for readers who want more.

The best place to start is Dead Reckoning — a survey ship cut off from home, command in the wrong hands, and a long way back by dead reckoning. From there the universe opens outward: deep-space navigation crews learning the cost of every traversal, a first-command thriller on the deep frontier, first contact, temporal intelligence, and the slow institutional reckoning with a mechanism nobody wanted to measure. Most books stand alone; every series stands alone; the universe is what connects them.

Before writing fiction, Breed spent two decades in technology, building systems, solving problems, and developing an unhealthy respect for what happens when complex infrastructure fails in ways nobody anticipated. That sensibility runs through the franchise: institutions behave like institutions, technology is furniture until it breaks, and the most interesting science is the kind that makes someone's career very difficult.

He lives in Newcastle, Australia, reads too much Kim Stanley Robinson, and believes the best science fiction is the kind you can hand to someone who doesn't read science fiction.
