The Atlas

The map section. One universe, several kinds of map: the near sky has coordinates; everything past the Span has only topology — what is near what, what is reached from where, how many days a leg takes.

How the regions relate

Beyond the charts

Off the charts

What the universe holds off every chart. These are not places the archive has lost; they are places it does not draw.

  • The Nhál— Not drawn.
  • The Architects— No origin system. Their vessels have never been imaged at distance; they arrive by changing the topology, not by crossing it.
  • The Hearth— A dead, starless sky where a debt was paid. Not part of the Sable Reach; not drawn.
  • The wound interior— Observed, never explained.

What the map is a map of

Only the near sky has coordinates. Junctions are places on the sky — a direction and a distance — and the first two tiers are drawn that way. Everything past the Span is a different kind of place: the Seam connects regions that share no sky position — the Cairn is about two hundred light-years from Geneva, and that is the only such figure the books give. Those charts are schematic. Positions on them are narrative — what is near what, what is reached from where, how many days a leg takes — and the sheets say so.

The larger shape: spent regions drained to the floor, the eighty-thousand-year scars of dead civilisations, and a debt that is dumped somewhere else. The far pocket is what that looks like from inside. Fifteen's sky going out is what it looks like arriving. The Span is one door with several sides — the Reach fights over it, and the far pocket and the Sable Reach open onto it from their own.
