A boundary-disruption discharge is the franchise's weapon of record, and it is priced. A secondary-stack pulse costs a tiny fraction of a traversal's contribution to the Wound; a primary-stack discharge costs five times as much, which is exactly why the service prohibits it and exactly why a desperate captain reaches for it anyway. Firing has a second consequence nobody can argue with: while the local topology is disrupted, the ship cannot talk to anyone.
