The Wound

The Wound

also: the Drag · the Cost · the Mechanism

First in The Long Watch (The Ruins) — named

The accelerating heat-death of the universe, caused by humanity's use of the Seam.

In full

Every Seam traversal carries a thermodynamic cost. The universe is dying faster because people use the Seam — not a metaphor, a mechanism. It is felt across the whole franchise as an unexplained 'floor' that climbs and won't zero, and is named outright only later (in The Ruins, where Marcus Cole learns ISCA has known since 2123). The Anchored call it the Drag or the Cost; the Briefed call it the Mechanism.

Key facts

  • A mechanism, not a metaphor: Seam use accelerates the universe's heat-death.
  • Named outright in The Ruins; ISCA has known since 2123.
  • Anchored call it the Drag or the Cost; the Briefed call it the Mechanism.
  • Its signature is the floor — a baseline that climbs and won't zero.
