The Ferren

First in Wide Sky (2312)

A human people, five generations diverged, living on Ostry under a failing sun.

In full

Descendants of the colony ship Kindred, lost into the reach in a seam accident around 2192. Under a heavier world and a dimmer sun they have grown broad-chested and deliberate, with a dusty slate undertone to the skin, wide dark eyes for the poorer light, and voices pitched low. Unmistakably people; a little strange. Their speech is Earth idiom drifted five generations — formal, sparing, old-fashioned. They are not aliens, and the books never explain them genetically; they are simply what happens to us somewhere else.

Key facts

  • Human-descended, not alien — same species, diverged build and features.
  • Speech register: formal, sparing, old-fashioned; Earth idiom drifted five generations.
  • They call the seam network the road, Earth-humans roadmakers, and the dying of stars the Going-Out.
  • Their beacon transmitted a two-generation message: a plea, and later a warning.
