Advanced, enigmatic, and — on the evidence — genuinely well-disposed: they intervene without being asked, help plainly and often, and wave off thanks. They keep a spoken tongue, which makes them unique among contacted peoples, and most of it translates automatically; the words the books leave untranslated are the ones characters deliberately refuse to translate. What they are, where they came from, and why they recognise the shape of the dark without ever explaining it, the novels do not settle. They are read from the outside, by people guessing.
