The physical furniture of a route. Marks are placed, surveyed, checked and re-checked, and a road without readable marks is not a road any responsible Master will take. They are also portable, which is the whole problem: equipment that can be installed can be removed, and a stripped road is one whose marks and drums have gone somewhere else and are keeping somebody else's lane open.
