A young Centre survey-service lieutenant flying the light, over-instrumented survey sloop *Pellan* in the expedition convoy. At the first lane-crossing his sloop rides up too close in the grain-hauler *Brask*'s drive-wash (the convoy near-miss Ackerman defuses, ); he apologises for his spacing on the open channel.
