About
Antagonist — the franchise throughline Moriarty.
Envoy and spokesman for the Ascendant, hailing the Endurance from his crippled ship the Ilvane in the wreckage-wake of a battle. Charismatic, articulate, wounded-dignified; begs shelter from the silent "monsters" (the Orun). Genuinely persuasive — he wins the bridge honestly, no villain-tell. The crew, on Aldridge's read and Sloane's call, fire on the Orun to cover him. The face that makes them help the wrong side, and feel good about it. - His speech renders instantly and fluently through the improved translator — the buried tell (Ascendant = corrupted-human tongue) that the crew does not clock. - The hook (chapter 16): surfaces, as natural curiosity through relief, an interest in where the Endurance is from — "I know every hull that still flies in this pocket; I have never seen your like." Deniable on first pass; it is the throughline's engine.
