Chief Engineer of the ISV Lodestar. She keeps a Nhál-assisted fast cruiser running when nobody fully understands the Nhál-assisted parts — the Aurora-class is newer and stranger than anything the Endurance ever flew, and Hartley improvises the maintenance manual in real time, often with Imeth translating the drive's behaviour. Unflappable, dry, profoundly competent; the calm centre of a small ship's gravity, which makes the rare moments she is rattled land like alarms.
