A string is a household and Berewick heads one. The working face of the ground: teaches Tavish a clip he has never seen and is unimpressed by his (chapter 14) — the first thing the reader learns about Wrent is that its people are better at the thing Kestrel is good. At the trade (chapter 15) Berewick is one of the string-heads arguing it in figures, across a string's own galley — closing speeds, sightlines, clip counts, spare drums, what a lane is worth in a bad year. The substitution is worse gear than what leaves; it is enough; "enough" is the whole negotiation, and the book says so plainly in the mouths of the people accepting it.
How they speak
A rigger's, from a world where everything is a rigging problem and nothing is a walking problem: tethers, clips, spins, string-length, what the lane costs to keep. Nobody persuades anybody with a speech; nobody appeals to conscience. Trade idiom throughout — no quaintness, no lecture.
