Guld

Protagonist

About

He was a chain man — fixed shore plant: cradles, take-ups, brakes, load pins and tell-tales in bays, walked on a round. Years of holding a damaged corridor open so that other people's schedules could decide who came out of it, at a place nobody wrote a book about. He is the Who Holds the Standard arithmetic, lived by somebody with no chamber, no Warden, no return and no roll. The organisation has no name. People call it Guld's, or the ones who came. It is the same institutional shape as the Cairn's own mobile authority — an authority that travels, riding hulls nobody owns, that nobody can order. Nobody in either book ever makes that observation out loud.
