1. chapter 1 — the renewal Corrigan loses is hers, and he has told nobody it is personal. She does not want the help and takes it. (This is Corrigan's private stake; without it he is the one whose life is entirely political intelligence.) 2. After chapter 1 — she loses the renewal and takes a Ring Six sublet, which means Corrigan's own defeat put his oldest friend in the ring that fails. He never connects the two on the page, and the narrator never connects it for him. In chapter 22 she is displaced, unhurt, living in a hall, and he has to look at her. 3. chapter 26 — she is the one specific person Rell goes into the trunk gallery for, at 03:40 on Day 51. She works twenty metres from the void terminal where Rell's brokerage trace sits, on the only egress the two failing blocs have. She lives. She does not know he came in for her. Corrigan never learns it.
