The sheet is the character. Bell works on paper, with a pencil, at the end of the table. The sheet he brings Navarro at midnight on 18 March asks what eleven people walk out with — four suits down there, eleven more in the west stores, nine of which actually arrive, one of those a size nobody can wear. By 20 March the same document has been rewritten twice, corrected about forty times in the margins, and has become the extraction order, with the thing Navarro made him put at the bottom and underline: once the door is open this room is finished.
How they speak
States the constraint, then the cost of relaxing it, and stops. "The room's warmer on Monday and I'm burning furniture on Thursday." Declines to give a figure he cannot defend and says why.
