They read everything. They explained nothing.
Ensign Sarah Bishop finds the impossible thing on a routine night shift: a junction reply that arrived four hundred and ten milliseconds before the query that produced it. She closes the fault in forty minutes. It gets her sent eight hundred light years out to the settlement at the far end of it, with no authority, no rank worth anything, and a certified comparison set carried in a tin.
Hart is not a frontier outpost. It is a town — nineteen thousand people, a lake they built themselves, a greenhouse ring, a school, a proper winter. Sarah has been there three weeks when the sky fills. What arrives does not land, does not broadcast, and does not attack. It walks into the settlement’s infrastructure and starts reading: archives, sensor nodes, forty-five years of a planet’s weather held in one cabinet.
For months Sarah refuses the question the whole settlement is asking, in public, at cost, while the pressure to give people something builds from the market to the command floor to Earth. When the evidence finally carries an answer, it will not be the one anyone was hoping for — and she will have to stand up in a full room and say it anyway. The visitors are never explained. That is not a withheld answer; it is the subject.

Chapter 1 — The Reply
The box score came up from the mail floor at ten past four, on paper, in a grey envelope with a New Mexico postmark on it and a boot mark across one corner. Ensign Sarah Bishop put it face down under her left elbow and went back to the Sennet reconciliation, because the reconciliation had been wrong since ten at night and the envelope would keep.
Route Operations ran three floors under the Directorate’s Geneva annexe, in a room built in the two-twenties for eighty people and staffed at four in the morning by nine. The live boards along the far wall carried every authenticated road inside Earth’s charter reach, four hundred and sixty of them, a line and a hand of numbers each, and the numbers moved the way numbers move when a thousand people a day are walking on a floor somewhere and none of them are thinking about you.
Sarah had the Sennet family on her own board. Four junctions, forty-one years of traffic, one settled world at the end of it with nineteen thousand seven hundred people on it, and a reconciliation that closed to eleven places on the first three junctions and refused on the fourth.
Ten hours in. Somewhere around one she had taken her shoes off under the desk, and somewhere around three she had put them back on, on the theory that a person with shoes on was a person still working, and the theory had held up better than the reconciliation had.
Lieutenant Commander Ruth Fairlie came down the aisle eating something out of a paper bag, pencil behind her ear, jacket over her arm and no longer even a pretence.
“Handover’s fifty minutes. Tell me the fourth’s closing.”
“It isn’t.”
“How far.”
“Four hundred and ten milliseconds.”
Fairlie stopped chewing.
“Sign?”
“Early.”
“Then it’s the array.” She came round the end of the console and put a hand flat on the edge of it, which was what she did instead of sitting. “It’s ten years past its refit and it’s on a reference that predates half this room.”
“One call.”
“What?”
“There are nine calls in the block. Eight of them close.” Sarah put the trace up on the board beside her. “It’s the ninth.”
Fairlie put the bag down.
Sarah left her to it. Three seconds, four — a bad reference on that array would put the same error on every exchange that used it, and if it were bad enough to move a timestamp four hundred milliseconds it would have taken the other three junctions with it, and the other three junctions were clean to eleven places, and all of that was already sitting behind the face of a woman who had written nine clock-fault findings on this family in four years.
“Six of my nine were somebody standing on a cable,” Fairlie said. “One was a different cable. One was real and it took me two months and a shouting match to get four hours of anybody’s time on it.”
“I know.”
“So you know what I’m going to ask.”
“Whether it’s worth your four hours.”
“Whether it’s worth me going down there and asking for them again.” Fairlie wiped her fingers on the bag. “I’ve spent that four hours twice this year and I’ve got about one left in me.”
Sarah pushed back from the console far enough to look at her properly. Down the far end of the room somebody’s board threw an alarm, and somebody cleared it, and the room went back to the sound of nine people and the ventilation.
“Give me until handover before you have to.”
Fairlie took the pencil out from behind her ear, considered it, and put it down on Sarah’s console, which she reserved for her own desk and had done at nobody else’s station in fourteen years.
“Fifty minutes.”
The envelope had come from Albuquerque the way everything her father sent came, which was by mail, on the ground, in four days. Inside it was a strip of newsprint the length of Sarah’s hand, cut with scissors, with a coffee ring on one corner that had made the whole journey with it.
ISOTOPES 7 — 4. Her father’s handwriting down the margin: Reyna went four for four and then dropped one in the eighth that my grandmother could have caught. Your mother says the west corridor survey came in under. Tell them at that office you have people.
There was a perfectly good network path from Albuquerque to Geneva that would have put the score in front of her in under a second, and her father, thirty-one years on municipal switching gear, had never once used it. Paper gets there or it doesn’t, he had told her at some kitchen table, a long time ago. Nothing in between.
Sarah read it twice, put it in her inside pocket, and went down into the packets.
The ninth call was the one Hart Settlement had made.
The first eight were Geneva polling the family the way Geneva polled everything, query out, reply back, the whole exchange sitting inside a window that had been the same width for forty-one years. The ninth had gone the other way — Hart’s ground array reaching up to the anchor package at the approach volume on its own account, which happened four or five times a day and was about as remarkable as a phone ringing.
And the anchor had answered it four hundred and ten milliseconds before Hart asked.
Sarah went at it from the anchor’s end instead of Hart’s, because Hart’s end was where anyone would look, and she went at the raw exchange log rather than the reconciliation, and by twenty-five past she had it.
The anchor had taken two queries in that window, and had done nothing wrong with either. Both addressed correctly, both answered correctly, the first reply going back to whoever had sent the first query and the second to Hart, on two separate lines of the anchor’s own log.
The reconciliation had collapsed them into one.
Nothing had ever asked it to do otherwise. Geneva polled on a schedule and Hart called four or five times a day, and in forty-one years the matching rule had never had more than two parties to keep straight on that road, so it paired each reply with the nearest query inside the window and had been right every time it had ever run. Give it a third caller and it hung the first reply on Hart’s query, because Hart’s query was the only one it had been built to expect.
So the four hundred and ten milliseconds was the distance between two callers, added up as though it were one exchange. No physics in it anywhere, and nothing wrong with the road. Sarah sat back with her hands off the board. That was the whole discrepancy explained inside forty minutes, and it would close the reconciliation, and Fairlie would get her sleep.
Then she pulled the first query to see who had sent it.
The query was correctly formed. It carried a Directorate route-authentication chain that resolved clean, every link, all the way back to the floor she was sitting on.
It resolved to ISV Providence.
“Ma’am.”
Fairlie came over with her jacket half on.
“It’s not Hart.”
“What isn’t?”
“The reply. The anchor answered somebody else as well, and the record married that one to Hart’s query.” Sarah had both hands on the desk edge. “The four-ten is the gap between the two callers. It’s bookkeeping.”
“So we’re fine.”
“The other caller’s Providence.”
Fairlie’s hand stopped halfway to the second sleeve.
“Say that again.”
“Chain resolves to ISV Providence. Clean. Every link.”
“Pull it—”
“Twice. Both match.”
“Fuck,” Fairlie said, and sat down on the edge of the console. “When?”
“Oh one thirty-six this morning.”
“Last position she gave us was the second junction, on the sixth, going through.” Fairlie had her thumb on the board already, walking the family backwards. “Cleared it, and that’s the last anybody’s had off her. Due at the third on the eighth and missed it. Missed the ninth as well, which is where somebody raises a locate, and there’s one open on her from Thursday sitting in a queue behind a fuel dispute.”
“There’s no road between the two. Nobody’s ever put one there.”
“No.” Fairlie stood up. “So she’s flown something unauthenticated, or somebody’s got her chain, or that anchor logged something that never arrived. And I’d take either of the others over the middle one.”
“Why?”
“Because if her authentication’s out, then everything on that family for forty-one years is a suggestion.” Fairlie got the rest of the jacket on. “Who’s aboard?”
“Six hundred and eleven.”
Sarah had that number out of her own head, off a manifest she had signed nine days ago. Fairlie caught that, and stopped in the middle of the aisle at half past four in the morning and let three seconds go by.
“You signed for something on that manifest,” Fairlie said.
“A crate. And my orders went with the crate to the eleventh run.”
“Right.” Fairlie’s face stayed exactly where it was. “Do the whole thing again on paper. Not the log, the arithmetic — the two queries, the gap, the chain. If it holds, I’m waking the Admiral, and I would very much like to be waking her about something I can hand her on a sheet.”
It held on paper.
Sarah did it at the desk with Fairlie’s pencil, because her own hands were doing a thing she had learned to distrust years ago, and paper made her show every step of it. Two queries. Four hundred and ten milliseconds between them. Two replies, both correct, both on the anchor’s log where they belonged. The matching rule underneath, and what it had done with them. The chain, link by link, written out.
The same on paper as on the board. She underlined nothing, and put it in the middle of the desk where Fairlie would see it from the aisle.
Admiral Marisol Keene came down onto the floor at twelve past five with her coat still on and her aide two steps behind carrying nothing, because there was nothing yet to carry.
“Show me.”
Sarah put the sheet in front of her. Keene read it standing, once.
“Who’s the caller?”
“Providence, ma’am.”
“Sure of the chain?”
“Yes.”
“Can she be there?”
“No.”
Keene looked up.
“All right. What do we actually know?”
“An authenticated query from a hull that can’t be where the query came from. That’s all of it. I don’t know how she did it, and I’m not going to guess.”
Keene put the sheet down on the console. “Ruth, upgrade the locate. Declare her missing on our own paper, timed at this hour and not at close of business, and put my name on the movement so nobody downstairs has to be brave. Continuous read on both anchor packages. Twelve months of that family’s chains into hard state before anybody touches them.”
“Ma’am.”
“And the reroute window shuts at twenty past eight and the secretariat wants the garrison rotation on the twenty-second run.” Keene had gone through all of it at the same pitch she had used for good morning. “They can have that. What I want out there is somebody with hands on the ground hardware before the twenty-second. What the instruments are doing, what the record says they did, both of them kept, and nothing reported that can’t be supported.”
Fairlie had her arms folded.
“The eleventh run’s her sister hull and she’s three weeks from being anywhere.”
“Then it isn’t going by carrier.”
They gave her eleven minutes at the end of it, in the aisle, with the day watch coming in off the street and the handover going on around them.
“Freighter out of Marseille tomorrow, then whatever’s local off the Cairn for the last leg,” Keene said. “Civilian hull. You’ll be a passenger and you’ll have no authority aboard whatsoever.”
“Understood, ma’am.”
“You will once you’re aboard.” Keene had her hands in her coat pockets. “The other thing. There are forty-odd people out there who’ve run that family for four decades, and inside a month they’ll have been told a twenty-four-year-old off the Geneva floor found what they missed. Some of them are going to decide they don’t like you, and about half of those will have a point.”
Sarah kept her mouth shut, which was the correct answer and was also all she had.
“Sooner or later somebody’s going to ask you how she got there,” Keene said. “People will want an answer, because there are six hundred and eleven people missing. Don’t give them one just because they want it. If you don’t know, say you don’t know.”
“And if I get something?”
“Show me the sheet.” Keene turned for the stairs. “Go home for a day. Tell somebody.”
The declaration went onto the Directorate’s paper at four minutes past six and reached the boards seven minutes later. Sarah watched the Sennet Four line take its new flag from the aisle with her coat over her arm, having lost the ability to sit down at some point in the last hour.
Fairlie came and stood next to her, holding two things.
“Your travel’s cut. Marseille, eleven, and your gear goes as freight.” She handed over the first thing, which was a printed docket. Then the second, which was the pencil. “And that’s mine, and I want it back.”
“When?”
“Whenever you’re standing in this room again.” Fairlie put her hands in her pockets. “I’ve been on this floor fourteen years and I’ve never had a fourth junction refuse on me on a night I was ready to go home. Whatever’s out there, it waited until the room was empty.”
“That’s not — ”
“I know it isn’t. I’m tired and I’m allowed one.” She went back up the aisle towards the day watch. “Call your people, Bishop.”
Outside, Geneva was doing the thing Geneva does at six in the morning in the spring, all wet stone and traffic and somebody’s radio through an open window, and Sarah stood on the pavement long enough that a woman with a delivery trolley asked if she was all right.
Sarah found a bench with its back to the wind and called home, because it was ten at night in Albuquerque, which meant her father would be up and her mother would not.
Her father answered on the second tone with the kitchen behind him.
“Reyna owes you an eighth inning,” Sarah said.
“Reyna owes this whole city an eighth inning.”
Sarah told him where she was going. Four junctions, forty-one years, a place called Hart with nineteen thousand people on it. Freighter tomorrow, then whatever was going after that. It took her a while. The traffic went past behind her the whole time and he listened straight through, unusual for him.
“Mom will want to know it’s a real water job.”
“Is it a real water job?”
“They built the lake.”
There was a pause long enough that she looked at the counter, and then he said the thing he was always going to say, which was that he would mail something.
“Mail it to Hart,” Sarah said. “It’ll get there or it won’t.”
Her father made a sound she had been hearing her whole life and could not have described to anybody.
