Adi Lestari

Protagonist

Origin

Indonesia (Surabaya)

About

Indonesian (Surabaya); mid-30s; recovery & instruments engineer on the reduced Svalbard monitoring/decommission crew (~2071). Came up alongside Erika Magnusdóttir on the dead floor. Name convention (lock): Adi is his given name; Lestari is a second personal name the international programme files as his surname (common practice for two-name Indonesians). Friends call him Adi; the manifest / formal address use Lestari.

Part I: the friendship + the competition + the cold exchange + the refusal (so Erika goes alone). Part III: he's drawn from the cleared dead-floor crew onto the rescue; his meticulousness makes him the one fighting the haste / the corner-cutting (friction with Brandt and Garrett — see ). He discovers the sealed-contingency / persistence intent in Part III, before launch, and chooses to board and try to keep it a rescue from inside. - Part IV: the one decisive act of an over-careful life – Ribeiro names the surface-cluster solution and its price; Lestari makes the unauthorised choice and initiates the local link, defying Brandt's valid triage order. Mutinous, human, made without consent, at the cost of two recoverable lives. NOT written as the morally-superior "human" answer to a cold order – Brandt's order is correct; the reader may not choose Lestari's; the ambiguity is the point.

How they speak

Precise, qualifying, a little formal; says "let me just confirm" too often; warms only off-shift. Under pressure his sentences get shorter, not longer — the tell that he's stopped checking. (Planning-shorthand banned in his mouth — he speaks ordinary working terms.)
