The secondary stack ran at 0.024% above baseline. The same offset as the stack before it, and the stack before that — a ship telling you who it was in the one place ships tell you anything, which is the number that won’t go away.

Luo Jia had filed the calibration note three days back, before departure prep. The refit two years earlier had pulled the old secondary stack — five clean years, full diagnostic history archived — and within six months the new one had drifted into exactly the same offset. Two weeks of confirming the measurement before she’d write it down, because that was Luo Jia: she did not give you a number until the number had stopped being able to be anything else. Her note said the replacement was exhibiting the same profile as the 2143 unit, and attributed it to the Erika’s operating environment. Idris had read it, agreed, moved on. Twenty-eight years of traversal. Some vessels developed signatures the way knuckles develop calluses, in the place that did the work.

Idris sat at the Second Navigator’s console running pre-departure checks. Three days out from Svalbard orbital, the bridge in its morning configuration: full shift, every station crewed, the 72-hour countdown stepping through its verification protocol. At eight the ventilation made its scheduled cycle adjustment and the duct over the bridge intake dropped a quarter-tone, the way it did, the way the Erika breathed. The day-cycle lighting caught the wear on the console’s lip — two patches either side of the primary input array where his right hand had rested for fifteen years and worn the paint through to the alloy beneath. He had stopped seeing the wear. His hand found the spots without looking, the way it found the kettle in his quarters in the dark.

The CW3 approach calculations were done. Dáithí Mac Diarmada had submitted them the day before, three ahead of schedule, which was Dáithí’s pace and had been for seventeen years: early, exact, asking for almost no revision. Idris had walked the trajectory once himself for the pleasure of it, the way you might check a bridge truss you trusted, looking for the joint that took the load. The colony was twelve years old. Colonial World 3 in ISNA’s books; Eirún to the people living on it. Two hundred and eighty-five survivors of the Helga Andersen, three hundred crew and scientific personnel dropped into the CW3 system by an accidental traversal during a routine survey, fifteen of them lost across twelve years to age and to the early settlement’s hard luck. Idris opened the population verification interface. Two hundred and eighty-five matched the 2153 report’s final count — no change in two years, stable demographics, low mortality, a colony that had managed its twelve years well. He scrolled to the cross-mission comparison and there was the one number that didn’t sit flat: the colony’s psychological-resilience markers, running about a standard deviation and a half above every other stranded population on the Erika’s rotation. It had been in the 2148 file. It had been in the 2151 file. Nothing since had touched it. The welfare summary called it strong community cohesion, which was the phrase ISNA reached for when the data outran the framework that was supposed to hold it. Idris had read the summary three times. Competent, exact, professionally warm in the way twenty-nine years of ISNA service made a person warm — at the edges, on purpose, where it helped the work.

Sóley was not Halland, and everyone knew it, including her. The Erika ran at full efficiency under her hand all the same. What had shifted across seven years was subtler than loyalty and the crew managed it without naming it: when Reidun needed a sign-off on a non-trivial engineering deviation she walked to whichever console was nearer, but she walked through Sóley’s sightline first; when Vesna routed a flagged signal she put it on Sóley’s screen, then Idris’s, in one turn, an order that looked like protocol and wasn’t quite required by it. Small currents. Idris had watched each one appear and had changed nothing about how he stood at his own console. Neither had Sóley. They both let the ship’s gravity find its own resting angle and declined, by mutual unspoken agreement, to put a hand on the scale.

The diagnostic came back green across primary functions. The observation deck’s porthole seal — replaced after the 22-C mission, four years into its life now — held its pressure differential. The galley ventilation cycled on its interval. He had noticed the match his first week and started appearing; the crew had let the gap close around him the way water closes. Amara would be down there now, taking his pressure readings and adjusting the environmental controls before he asked — a three-second exchange that had been three seconds for six months and would, Idris suspected, be three seconds in ten years.

One thing sat slightly proud of the rest. The 2148 classification had logged a signal-layer anomaly at the CW3 junction — minor variance, attributed to those same tidal effects, flagged insufficient for further analysis. The colony had lived on that world for seven years since and never asked for follow-up, never filed additional work, never queried the attribution. They had taken the ISNA model and gone quiet.

Idris read the classification twice. The anomaly was real. The attribution was plausible. The silence was the part that didn’t fit — not loud, not a flag, just the wrong shape against everything else in the file, the way a single cold rivet tells you where the leak is before any gauge does.

The galley corridor opened behind him and Velek came back to his station without a word, morning routine done. Idris let him pass into the edge of his attention and stayed with the sequence.

The Erika had been his ship for seven years — not in the command structure, in the other way, the way time makes a thing yours without anyone signing for it. Second Navigator for seven years; learning the First Navigator’s work for seven years without saying the words. The promotion would come; ISNA’s command track ran on rails. Solvei’s entry sat archived, date-stamped 2138. Her thread in the condolence archive had not moved since the memorial. Wei Lin still moderated the folder from her ground posting in Tromsø; her last note, six months old, marked Cohort 15’s first successful traversal with the quiet pride of someone who remembered when traversals were not a thing you assumed.

Idris scrolled to Reidar’s section. Thirteen years since Junction 14-A. The condolence thread had run two years past the classification — crew, ISNA officers who’d worked with him, colleagues from the Svalbard array where Ingrid still worked — and then gone still in 2145. Idris read it twice. Each line. Each date.

Saga Halvorsen was nineteen in June 2155, twenty come mid-September. Seven years old when her father was lost at Junction 14-A on Day 23 of the September 2142 mission. Seven when Amara made the first Bergen visit in February 2143 and set the driftwood in the kitchen window. Twelve at the visit in February 2148, when she had stood in the ISNI practice chamber and measured non-standard distance from the instruments’ range — a child reading a room the way the people who made the room read it.

Saga had filed three weeks ago. The inquiry was in the ISNA record. It had landed in Cohort 12’s folder because Reidar had been Cohort 7 and the folder protocol cross-referenced family inquiries to the original member’s file when the relationship was direct. The system had done a clean, mechanical, correct thing and put a daughter’s application for the work in the same folder that held the documentation of the work killing her father.

Idris sat with the departure interface open in front of him, green across all functions, the countdown stepping down, the bridge keeping its pre-departure rhythm around him.

Nineteen years and eight months at filing. ISNA wanted eighteen at inquiry, twenty at admission if the preliminary work held. She had enrolled in Bergen’s pre-navigator programme in 2152 at sixteen — two years of preparation before she even filed. The timeline was thorough and exactly right, the application of a person who had decided at twelve what she would be and spent eight years building towards it without hurry.

Idris closed the folder. He did not flag the entry. He did not message Wei Lin to ask about processing timelines, did not message Amara to ask what the last Bergen visit had been like or whether Ingrid had mentioned the application, did not message Saga. The inquiry would run through standard intake — four to six months of preliminary assessment, and she would pass, because the Bergen record would be thorough — and she would be assigned a cohort number inside two years. A pot creaked through the corridor — Reidun’s coffee, three decks down through the air handling, audible because the ship was at standby and the array’s masking pulse wasn’t up to operational yet. On any other vessel the sound would have meant nothing. Reidun had filed an engineering complaint about it in 2151, got the pot replaced, and the creak had survived three pots since, because the fault was not in any pot but in a deck plate that had taught itself a sympathetic resonance the pot only carried. She had stopped fighting it years ago and logged the resonance as a feature of Deck 3 — which was as close as Reidun came to affection for an object. Idris had come to hear the creak as a kind of all-clear: if the deck was singing its one note, the deck was where it had always been.

The chronometer read 08:47. Departure at 09:00. He ran the final systems check. Green.

The CW3 anomaly stayed with him. Twelve years on a world with a strange junction; seven years since the classification; no follow-up, no question, every visit met with everything ISNA asked and nothing more. Eight months of baseline. CW3 would carry it to twelve. His stylus put out its frequency-modulated tone as the entries logged, a soft 600 Hz with a small downward slide at each one, the Tarvan equivalent of a confirming nod. Idris had filtered it out of his attention inside two weeks; by the third month his ear had filed it as bridge-normal. The pre-departure bridge had its own composite signature now — the stylus, the harmonic standby pulse through the deck, the ventilation’s quarter-tone break, and under all of it the engine spool coming up on the standard ramp from engineering. Idris entered the confirmation at his console. The sequence initiated. The engines engaged at 09:00:00 exactly, and the Erika came off the Svalbard orbital platform at the steady 0.3g of a T-class vessel that had made this departure for twenty-eight years — a push he felt in the small of his back before he saw it on any display.

The drift readings came up. Harmonic array resonance stable, engine output nominal, the acceleration curve tracking trajectory inside 0.02%. The 0.024% secondary-stack offset sat there in Luo Jia’s feed, persistent, within tolerance, the ship’s own number.

Engineering came back on the secondary channel, Luo Jia’s voice brief: Stack at 0.024. Holding. The same readback as the calibration note three days ago, given again because departure had a protocol and the protocol asked for it; she had read it back the same way at every departure for ten years, and since the junction 14-A run she gave the figure to the third decimal and not one further than the instrument earned. Reidun followed at the engine-room line: Engine at design. No exceptions. The phrase was Reidun’s — older than her tenure, older than his career, some early-ISNA chief engineer’s words gone down through three generations of T-class engine rooms like a thing passed hand to hand. She would say it again in fourteen days at the CW3 approach and it would mean the same thing. Idris caught the even tone inside it and confirmed both readbacks.

The Svalbard platform receded on the aft display, its lights going small against the black — the facility where the Erika had sat between missions, the one it would come back to in ninety days if the timeline held.

Saga’s inquiry stayed at the back of his attention. The daughter of Cohort 7 applying to the programme her father had finished twenty-six years ago. Ingrid would have read the application before Saga sent it — institutional habit ran as deep on the signal-physics side as on navigation — and whatever Ingrid had thought, she had let it through. Saga at twelve, measuring the room. Saga at twenty, filing the form. Eight years between, in Bergen, with the driftwood in the kitchen window and the cohort folder open on Ingrid’s tablet of an evening the way it was open on his console of a morning. The outline of it was clear to him; what it bounded was not. The Erika steadied at 0.3g and the crew slid into their departure-day routines, the ship pointed at the first junction point, fourteen days to approach and fifteen to arrival in the CW3 system.

At the bilateral-observer console Velek had finished his pre-departure logging and gone to his personal calibration record; the stylus tone shifted to its review key, the 600 Hz holding flat with no modulation, no entries being made, the sound of him reading back what he had written. Idris caught the change the way another navigator might catch an engine note settling into cruise. The review pass usually ran four to six minutes.

“That signal,” Velek said, not turning from his console, the carrier under his voice sliding once. “The one your arrays found in twenty-forty-seven. We marked it too. I keep meaning to ask whether your people ever decided what it was.”

“No,” Idris said. “We decided it was real and stopped there.”

Velek made the small downward tone that meant agreement, or something near it, and went back to his record.

Idris held the exchange a moment, the way you hold a number you’ll want later, and let it go. The signal was a thing his arrays had found before he was born; it had nothing to do with the colony, or the silence, or the seventy-two hours behind him. He turned back to the drift readings — stable, the offset holding at 0.024, the Erika running true under his hands — and did not, in the moment, weigh what it might mean that the Tarvan had marked the same signal at all.
