1 · GROUNDS FOR TRANSFER

Early in the first deployment of the ISV Resolute, ISCA Exploration-class, first of her class, a medical diagnosis returned to Commander Elara Vasquez compelled her retirement from command. Commander Vasquez had commanded the Resolute from commissioning. The board accepted the diagnosis and the retirement without contest.

Commander Vasquez retired at the grade she had held throughout her service. The grade of Captain, created by Geneva Operations Directorate Order 2192/07-G-441, is not retroactive. It does not apply to her. The record names her, here and hereafter, as Commander.

2 · SUCCESSION

Command of the Resolute passed to her serving second, Commander Marcus James Cole, of Charleston, South Carolina. Until his acceptance signature, Commander Cole was addressed aboard as Commander, and the chair he was to take was the command chair.

At his acceptance signature, on Day 19 of the deployment, Order 2192/07-G-441 took effect. Commander Cole became the first holder of the rank of Captain. The signature is the turn: before it, the command chair; after it, the captain's chair.

3 · LOGGED EXCHANGE

LOGGED EXCHANGE · AT THE HATCH · DAY 19

VASQUEZ: “Captain Cole. The Resolute is yours. Walk her slowly.”

COLE: “Commander Vasquez. The Resolute will do what she is here to do.”

The exchange is reproduced verbatim from the bridge log. It records the first use of the new rank in address. Commander Vasquez departed the vessel the same day. She remains, in all subsequent record, Commander.
