The accident needed a date, and was given the ninth of September, because the archived weather for the ninth showed a front across the western Barents with icing to sea level, and a search stood down after four days of that would read as prudence rather than haste. On paper the programme’s twice-weekly charter rotation out of Tromsø acquired a leg that had never flown: a positioning flight onward to a decommissioned platform, five specialist staff embarked in support of instrument recovery. Over international water, in September icing, with no wreckage and no witnesses, the accident board’s file was thin and would stay thin.
The manifest, written twice
By function, for the operator’s copy: two flight crew, five passengers, recovery equipment.
By name, for the ministry’s: Brandt, Sanne. Darwish, Tariq. Lestari, Adi. Mensah, Kofi. Ribeiro, Yara. The commander first by the accident of the alphabet.
All five had been off the ordinary establishment since June — a secondment instrument of two paragraphs, for the duration of a joint exercise, co-signed in summer as housekeeping.
The families
Three capitals carried the aircraft, each notifying under its own law from two paragraphs of agreed lines: the aircraft, chartered in support of a joint environmental monitoring exercise, was lost at sea on 9 September with two crew and five embarked staff; an air and surface search was conducted and suspended on 13 September; recovery of remains was not possible. The capitals’ drafts came back and did not match — one put the leg en route to the installation, one between the settlement and the platform, one asked after remains of which there were none. The divergence was allowed to stand, with one line in the running annex that only the compartment would read: Versions differ in transit detail. Divergence accepted; correction would document coordination.
Two households could not be given the aircraft at all, and received the second version — an accident in the course of a classified test; no location, no cause, no remains — delivered from a two-page script, mid-morning, after the dependant has left for school, counsel present. The approving officer struck the sentence every such script carries, that death had been immediate and there had been no suffering, because no one alive could source either clause. Then he sat with the page a while, wrote the sentence back in above his own strike, and initialled the insertion in the margin.
One next of kin asked one question outside the script — whether her husband had been alone — and was answered from line fourteen: that he was with his crew. Line fourteen was the one sentence in the script that the sealed record would also have supported.
The oldest account in the stack
Drafted in the first week of March by somebody working fast, and standing seven months without amendment: missing in a remote field incident; search suspended; body unrecovered. The autumn asked one page more of it — the determination, presumed deceased, through the Icelandic registry, to the family, personal effects to follow. Among the effects, by a certifying officer’s amendment in her own hand on the personal-effects annex: one desk lamp, green-shaded, returned with the March things.
The instrument
A page and a half, eleven drafts, the eleventh differing from the tenth by one word:
No energisation of any asset of the 4471 series. No reconstruction of the transfer apparatus, in whole or in part. No successor programme absent the unanimous concurrence of the partners and a prior finding of the standing commission.
Fourteen signatures across five capitals, the ministry side, and the commission; the fourteenth the only one signed north of Tromsø. One live entry remained on the asset when everything else had gone grey — a hold in amber since March — and the system would not seal around an open incident. Disposition entered: Closed — refer sealed finding. The amber went grey with the rest.
The notice
Three lines by the urn in the mess, over the operator’s name and the board’s file number, released following notification of the families. In all the weeks it hung there, nobody asked one question about it. And in the drying room off the mess, inside the door of an unassigned locker, five names in pencil, one below another, and beneath the names a date.
The date is the sixth of September. The notice says the ninth. The locker was left unassigned.
