The Orun Channel — Pressure-Rig Log

There are no words in this exchange. The translator fails on every pass and returns nothing usable. What crosses the channel is pressure, rhythm, and weight — carried on a salvaged Orun emitter welded to the Endurance's hull. The log records the carrier, the attempts, the translator's silence, and the one thing that finally lands.

SHIP-TIME SRC CHANNEL EVENT
07:41:02 RIG Emitter spin-up. Hull-mount array drawing from secondary bus. Coil temperature rising, nominal.
BRANDT Ferris's weld is holding. She says don't trust it past forty minutes. We won't have to.
07:43:18 RIG CARRIER ACQUIRED. Orun band, sub-acoustic. Pressure differential locked. We are broadcasting on their channel.
METER Power draw 4.1 MW sustained. Local entropy floor +0.3% above ambient. Logged. The rig costs to run.
07:44:55 TX→ Handshake attempt 01. Standard PMK preamble, pressure-modulated. Awaiting return.
07:45:31 PMK RETURN DETECTED. Decode → NULL. No lexical structure. No grammar. Translator yields nothing.
HALE It answered. That's not nothing. The PMK just can't hear it as language because it isn't one.
07:47:09 TX→ Handshake attempt 02. Stripped preamble. Pure tone, ascending pressure ramp.
07:47:44 PMK Return waveform vast and slow. Period > 90 s. Decode → NULL. Buffer overrun on the third lobe.
METER Entropy floor +0.7%. Each transmission nudges it. N. Hale wants the number on the record. It is on the record.
07:51:26 TX→ Handshake attempt 03 — 07. Varied amplitude, varied rhythm. Mimicry of returned waveform.
07:53:10 PMK Decode → NULL ×5. PARTIAL WAVEFORM MATCH 11%. Then 4%. Then drop. They feel us trying and do not answer.
BRANDT We're shouting the wrong shape at something the size of weather. We had them down as the threat. We were on the wrong side of this.
08:02:33 NARAL Nhál delegate requests the channel. Hands her own waveform to the rig. Not a message to decode — a korrvesh. A grief carried formally. A grief-debt.
NARAL Stop translating. Let me carry what I owe across to them. They will not hear a sentence. They will feel that someone arrived already grieving.
08:03:01 TX→ Korrvesh transmitted. Low, even, sustained. No preamble. No request. Weight only.
METER Power draw spikes 5.6 MW. Entropy floor +1.2%. The largest single cost of the session. Logged in full.
08:04:47 ORUN RETURN. The whole hull moves with it. PMK decode → NULL — and it does not matter. What lands is not a sentence. It is the same weight, sent back, and made heavier. They are not hunting. They are grieving. They have been grieving the entire time.
NARAL There. That is an answer. The debt is acknowledged. We were never speaking to a weapon.
08:06:12 RIG Carrier held, then released by mutual fall-off. Emitter spin-down. Ferris's weld intact. Session ends.

INTERPRETATION · The translator never decoded a word, and there was never a word to decode. The crew had built a machine to make the Orun speak; what the channel needed was for someone to arrive already carrying the grief the Orun were drowning in. Naral did not translate. She paid. And the weight came back doubled — which, in the only grammar the Orun keep, is the whole of the sentence.
