The Lantern — Incident Report

The night the region's one lit door was attacked — a bombing, a death toll, and a crackdown that blamed a whole movement for one cell's act. Read the structural annex, filed separately, for the failure nobody wanted to read.

THE LANTERN · INCIDENT 2241-LTN-01 ISCA-FC · RESTRICTED · INITIAL — SUBJECT TO REVISION

The Lantern holds a single great fold open and lit so that a whole frontier region can thread home through one mouth. On the night of this incident an explosive device was placed against an anchor station and detonated. The fold held. The people did not all.

Authorship

Initial attribution was made to Anchorage elements within hours, and a regional crackdown followed: detentions, courier-network seizures, the movement named entire for the act. This desk records, for the file, that the attribution is not settled. The doctrinal centre of the movement disowns the act and the Charter forbids it; the act fits a hard splinter; it fits, equally, a provocation dressed to look like one. The crackdown proceeded ahead of the finding. That sequence is itself noted.

The movement was blamed in hours and the device was understood in weeks. The order of those two facts is the part of this incident the region will remember.

Structural annex (filed separately)

Engineering’s annex to this report concerns the anchor lattice itself and is filed under separate cover. It records the spar-3 drift and the rising continuous draw logged across recent surveys — “within tolerance — monitor.” The annex makes no claim that the structure contributed to the casualties. It observes only that the Lantern was already carrying more than it was built to carry on the night it was attacked, and that the two facts arrived at the same door at the same time.

Disposition

Restore and hold the Lantern; complete the casualty notifications; reopen the authorship finding without reference to the crackdown already under way. The region cannot lose this door. Everything else in this report is secondary to that, and the report says so plainly because, in The Guttering Light, everyone involved will be tempted to forget it.
