Washing Day

They rigged the tow at the junction on a Tuesday, in the outer roads, with the Grebe holding station and the drained lighters coming down to her one at a time on the handling tugs like cattle being loaded by somebody who had done it before. Six lighters, empty, going home the long way for refit. Eme ran the wires from the board; Tave stood out at the aft handling station in a suit with a hand on the winch housing, feeling through the glove for the judder that meant a wire was about to make a fool of somebody; and Ollie Rusk, four weeks aboard and nineteen years old, went where he was pointed and hauled what he was handed and asked, on average, one question per minute, which the crew had privately agreed was not the worst ratio they’d shipped with.

Eme was the mate, and had been twelve years on the hauls before anyone let her near a board, and kept, as her one open eccentricity, a hand-worked reckoning of every leg in a hardback book — position by dead reckoning, worked with a pencil and the old tables, checked nightly against the nav and almost never out by much. Rusk had asked her, early on, why she bothered when the nav did it to nine places. “Because the nav agrees with itself,” Eme said, “and so does a liar.” He’d written that down. He wrote a lot of things down. The crew pretended not to know he kept a book of his own.

“Why the long way?” was one of that Tuesday’s. “The inside passage is four days. We’re taking nine.”

“Because the inside passage isn’t there anymore,” Eme said, making a wire fast. “Next question.”

Piet fed them at the end of it, because rigging day got the big dinner; that was law. The Grebe’s galley law was extensive and unwritten and enforced with bread. The ship carried printer feed like every hull on the run, and four days out of five Piet used it and said nothing against it; rigging day he went to the dry stores instead and did it the long way, flour and water and salt and the time it took. He had made the case exactly once, years back, by putting the two loaves on the table side by side and going away again. No tools on the table without treaty. No sad talk at dinner — sad talk was for the washing-up, when your hands had something to do. The drying line strung in the warm alley behind the heat exchangers belonged to everyone and the pegs belonged to Piet, and heaven attend the hand that left with one in a pocket. He’d cooked on bigger ships and never said why he’d stopped; he had a granddaughter’s drawings taped inside the dry-stores locker and a way of standing in his galley doorway at the end of a watch, tea towel over his shoulder, counting his crew back down the passage without ever appearing to count.

Della Withy took the Grebe out of the roads herself, as she always did, and walked the ship before turning in, as she always did, aft to forward, engine spaces to wheelhouse, the walk she had inherited from old Master Corliss along with the ship, the coffee ritual, and a leak in the aft locker that three yards had failed to find. Corliss used to say a Master’s feet knew things before the boards did. Corliss said a lot of things, most of them twice, and Della had spent her first five years aboard rolling her eyes at them and the twenty since finding out, one by one, at intervals, that they were all true.

The argument about the aft chronometer began on day four of the leg, at watch-change, when Tave came up from the engine spaces with his sleeves rolled and a look on his face that the rest of the Grebe’s crew knew the way farmers know a cloud.

“Aft clock’s point-eight of a second slow,” he said, to the wheelhouse at large. “Against the master. Point-eight.”

“Tragedy,” said Eme, at the board, not turning around.

“It was true at midnight and it’s truer now.” Tave set his mug down on the sill where mugs were not to be set, which he did daily, and which Della Withy had stopped fighting in about 2331. “That clock has held to the master within a fiftieth for nine years. I calibrated it at the yard in the spring. Point-eight of a second is not the clock.”

“Then it’s the universe,” Eme said. “Log it and have your dinner.”

That was the Grebe: sixty metres of tug and long-haul stores, five crew, with a tow of drained lighters riding astern like ducklings, four days out from the junction, on the long cold leg every hauler on this run knew by its own name — the outside passage, nine days of honest space in a slow arc around the swallowed reach that the charts marked in grey hatching and the notices called a margin and working crews called nothing at all, because you didn’t talk about it, the way you didn’t call a leg finished before the wires came off.

Della had run the outside passage some hundred times. The rules of it were not in the notices, though the notices existed — Masters are advised that margin boundaries are provisional; interior chronometry is unreliable; vessels shall give way as they would to weather — and she could have recited those in her sleep. The rules that mattered had come down to her from old Master Corliss with the ship, the way the coffee ritual had, and the leak in the aft locker nobody could find: you kept your standoff with a margin as you kept your manners with a bull. You did not economise on the arc. And you did not stand at the ports staring into the hatched grey like a tourist — nothing would happen; it was simply low, like reading over somebody’s shoulder.

What was inside the hatching nobody knew and the notices did not say. The reach had been swallowed before Della was born — swallowed was not the official word; the official word was reclassified — and the boundary line got resurveyed every few years and was never quite where the last survey left it. Margins breathed. Everyone on the run knew that, and nobody on the run said it in those words, and the Grebe went around, wide, every trip, with the bread rising in the galley and the washing strung on the drying line Piet had rigged in the warm alley behind the heat exchangers, because a working ship is a village and a village has laundry. Coveralls went in the hopper at the end of a leg and came out of the printer as new coveralls, which was what the hopper was for. Shirts didn’t. The water came back round the loop whatever you did with it, so a wash cost you heat the exchangers were shedding anyway, and the pegs cost you nothing but Piet.

By day five the aft clock was four seconds slow.

Tave took the chronometer apart on the galley table on the morning of day six, which was a breach of half of Piet’s standing ordinances, negotiated down to a two-hour licence in exchange for Tave’s tinned plums, and the crew drifted through to watch in ones and twos the way you watch a neighbour dig up his garden looking for a pipe.

The clock was fine.

That was the finding, delivered at length, with the movement spread on a cloth in forty exact pieces and reassembled to spec and set running and checked against the master, at which point it was four point six seconds slow and losing, steadily, a little more each watch, like a thing leaning.

“It’s not the clock,” Tave said, and this time nobody made the joke, because the aft chronometer hung on the port bulkhead of the engine spaces, and port was the side that faced the hatching, and everyone at that table could do the geometry without a stylus.

Della finished her coffee before she spoke, which was one of the ways a Master says this is not an emergency without wasting the words.

“Eme. Take us out another two thousand. Ease it in over the watch, no drama, keep the tow settled.” She turned the mug a quarter-turn. “Log: standoff increased at Master’s discretion, margin chronometry noted. Tave, put your clock back together and stop upsetting the cook.”

Two thousand out, with six lighters on the string, cost the Grebe the better part of seven hours over the remaining arc, and seven hours late at the far junction meant the berth queue, and the berth queue meant the owners’ agent sending the note he sent, with the little regretful phrases in it that cost him nothing. Della wrote weather allowance in the projection and did not blink. It was not weather. It was also, in every way that had ever mattered to the people who actually ran this leg, exactly weather: a thing you could not argue with, could not see the inside of, and gave way to with your schedule because the alternative was giving way to it with something you valued more. The agent’s little phrases were a known cost of the run. She priced them in the way Corliss had taught her to price them, which was at nothing.

“Notices say the boundary’s provisional,” Ollie Rusk said, from the end of the table. Nineteen, first long run, four weeks aboard, and he had the folio open in front of him because he was the kind of boy who read the folios, which the crew found funny and Della privately found excellent. “Provisional meaning it moves? Or provisional meaning nobody’s sure where it ever was?”

“Yes,” said Eme, and went up to the board.

Piet put a second slice of bread in front of the boy the way other men would have put a hand on his shoulder. “I saw a light out there once,” he said, conversationally, to the table, to nobody. “Thirty years back, on the Marta B, same leg, further in than we’d ever stand now. A light, low down, steady, like a farm at dusk. Whole crew saw it, four minutes odd, and then it wasn’t there.”

Rusk had stopped chewing. “What did you do?”

“Logged it,” Piet said, “and had soup.”

It came on the third watch of day seven, at what the master clock called 02:12, and it did not come as a light.

Eme had the wheelhouse. Her cross-check chimed — the port hull cameras throwing a luminance flag; on the aft feeds that meant a lighter’s anchor beacon iced over and strobing, and on the port beam it had never in her twelve years meant anything at all — and she pulled the feed to the middle screen, and stood looking at it — several seconds, she logged afterwards, honestly: disbelieving the image — and then she put her thumb flat on the all-stations and said, in a voice she kept level and was proud of for keeping level: “Master to the wheelhouse. Everybody up. Nobody touch anything.”

Abeam to port, where the hatching was, where every run she had ever made said there was grey dark and more grey dark, there was a morning.

It stood in the black like a held breath — a stretch of ground that filled nine degrees of the port arc and could not be put at any distance at all: no range return, no parallax between the paired cameras, geometry with one answer missing. A slope of rough grass going up to a hedge, and a house end-on, pale plaster, sun on it, low sun, long shadows, the light of about eight o’clock on a fine day somewhere temperate. A rotary clothesline in the yard, turning a little. Wind, then. Sheets on the line — white, and one patterned, small flowers, the kind of pattern that goes out of and back into fashion every forty years forever — and pegged shirts, and a child’s things, small and bright. A dog lay in the grass with its chin down and its ears up.

A door they could not see must have opened, because the dog’s head came up, and a woman came around the house end with a basket on her hip.

Nobody in the wheelhouse of the Grebe said anything at all.

The woman was maybe forty. She wore a man’s jumper. She set the basket down, and took out something white, and shook it — they saw the crack of it, the way wet cotton snaps, they saw it and did not hear it, the morning was perfectly and totally silent — and pegged it, two pegs from a peg bag hung on the line arm, working along, unhurried — a job her hands had done a thousand times while her head was somewhere else entirely. The sun came through the sheets. The dog rolled onto its side.

Partway along the line a child came out — seven, eight, barefoot, a boy or a girl, nobody aboard could swear which — and orbited the garden twice at a dead run for no reason that would ever be knowable, the pure engineless running of children, and stopped at the dog and pulled its ear gently and said something up at the woman, one short something, and the woman answered without turning around, with a peg in her teeth, and the child took whatever the answer was back inside at the same dead run.

The sheets filled and emptied. The shadows shortened by nothing anyone could measure. High up in that other sky there was an aircraft’s thin line of white, drawn slow and straight, and Della Withy stood at her own cold port with the coffee forgotten in her hand, and the boy’s whisper started — what is— — and Piet’s low ssh met it, the ssh you use in a church or a hide.

Procedure, meanwhile, got done: Della confirmed the recorders running on all four port feeds, confirmed the tow settled, confirmed the standoff unchanged — they were not drifting toward it, it was not drifting toward them, nothing whatever was happening except that nine degrees of somebody’s morning was standing abeam in the dark a full light-hour from the nearest catalogued anything — and logged, at 02:19, in her own hand, the only sentence she could put her name to: Phenomenon abeam to port. Real-image characteristics. No range. Recording.

Rusk had come up barefoot, in his sleep shirt, and stood at the port with his mouth open, and it was when the child came out — a kid, running, a kid his own recent species — that his hand started to come up, to wave, the plain human idiot beautiful reflex, somebody is there, you wave, kids wave back — and Eme’s hand closed on his wrist and put it back down on the sill.

“One way, son,” she said, very quietly. “It comes through one way.”

Nobody knew if that was true. It was what crews said. It was in no notice ever printed, and every working crew on the run held to it like scripture: whatever you saw, it could not see you, and you did not test it, and Della, watching the woman pause with a peg in her teeth and glance back toward the house — at a kettle, at a child’s shout, at nothing, at some ordinary summons out of frame that had happened, that had already happened, that had been over for two and a half centuries before the Grebe’s frames were laid — was, for one unprofessional moment, unspeakably glad of the rule, because if the woman had turned and looked at her she did not know what she would have done.

The woman pegged the last of it. She picked up the basket, and clicked her tongue at the dog — you could see the click, the dog got up — and went around the house end, and was gone, and the morning stood there without her, sheets lifting and falling, for a while longer.

Then it thinned. There was no moment you could point to. It thinned the way breath thins off glass, the grass last, and then there was only the hatching, grey on grey, and the aft camera’s luminance flag cleared itself, and the wheelhouse of the Grebe stood in its own small light with five people in it not looking at each other.

The master clock made it nine minutes, all told. The aft chronometer came out of those nine minutes carrying half a second more of its debt than it took in — the steepest single loss of the whole passage, Tave established later, watch by watch, from the logs — which is to say: the clock that had been leaning all week leaned hardest while the morning stood there.

“Right,” Della said at last, into the quiet, in the voice she used for weather that had passed. “Piet. I think tea.”

The next hour was procedure, and everyone was glad of it, and nobody said so.

Eme walked the tow on the aft feeds, lighter by lighter, wire by wire, and found every one of them riding exactly as it had ridden for seven days, which she confirmed twice. Rusk was sent the length of the ship with the second-watch checklist, which did not need doing, and did it to a standard the checklist had rarely seen. Tave went down to the engine spaces and stood in front of the aft chronometer with his arms folded for a long time, watching it lose, at its steady patient rate, second on second, the way a man watches a gauge he has decided to out-stubborn; and then he did the strangest thing anyone did that night, though nobody saw it: he got the log camera, and photographed the clock face beside the master repeater, both dials in one frame, and wrote the date on the back of the print the old way, in pencil, and put it in the drawer where the spare fuses lived, and told no one, and could not have said who the photograph was for.

In the wheelhouse Della played the port feeds back once, alone, at quarter speed. At the point where the boy’s hand had started to rise she stopped the frame, and sat looking at it — the woman mid-peg, the dog rolled over, Rusk’s hand a pale blur at the bottom of the image, lifted toward all of it — and then she wound the recording back to the beginning and let it run through at true speed, once, all nine minutes, doing nothing, the watch officer’s discipline of simply attending; and then she sealed the feeds under the incident reference the way the notices required, so that what the Grebe had seen would go where it was going whole, and not as anybody’s keepsake.

Eme worked her reckoning at the board as she worked it every night, pencil and the old tables, position by dead calculation, and checked it against the nav, and it agreed to the usual whisker, because the ship was exactly where the ship should be; that was somehow the worst fact of the night, that everything agreed, that the universe’s books balanced to nine places with a morning from three centuries ago standing off the port beam at no distance anybody could put a figure to. She entered the position in the hardback in her usual hand. Then, in the margin, where in twelve years she had written nothing but corrections, she wrote a single word, considered it, and let it stand. It was not layer and it was not phenomenon and it was not any word from any notice: washing.

Nobody went back to their racks. Piet had the galley lit and loud by three, at his own insistence, on the theory — stated to no one, enforced on everyone — that hands need work and mouths need bread, and he was rolling dough with more violence than the dough required while the crew of the Grebe sat around the table and had, in ones and twos, at angles, sideways, the conversation.

“Mid-century,” Eme said. “The washing line dates it. Rotary steel, that folding head — my gran had the same one rusting in her yard in Jos and hers was old. And the contrail. Call it 2030s, 2040s.”

“Earth, then.”

“Grass like that? Earth.”

“Your gran’s yard,” Rusk said, reaching for it the way the young reach for anything that connects. “Was it like—”

“No,” said Eme, in the tone of a hatch closing, and then, because the boy’s face did what it did, more gently: “Hers had chickens. Different continent, different century, different woman.” She turned her mug. “Same pegs, though. Exact same pegs. Explain that to me sometime, how three hundred years of everything and the pegs don’t change.”

Tave said one thing the whole night. He was not a talker at the best of times, and this was not the best of times, and he had been sitting with his tea going cold at his elbow doing something on his slate that turned out, when Piet leaned over shamelessly to look, to be nothing — a blank screen, awake, lit — and at some point in the third hour he said, to the table, without preamble: “The clock knew before we did.” And then he looked as if he would have given a week’s pay to have the sentence back, because engineers do not say such things, and nobody at the table quoted it back to him, and nobody needed to.

The nearest thing to a quarrel came at four, over the recording. Piet held — arms floured, absolute — that there were places a camera had no business, and a woman in her own garden centuries dead was the first place on the list; that they had filmed somebody who could not say no. Della let him finish. She was the Master; she could have ended it with the notices, which required the recording; she didn’t reach for them. “You’re right,” she said instead. “And if we hadn’t, then in a year, or ten, when it stops feeling like this — and it will, Piet, it does — there’d be nothing left of her but five people’s fading say-so. She’s been nobody’s business for three hundred years. Now she’s on the record of the age, hanging out her washing, forever.” She stood, and took her mug to the sink, and washed it, because on the Grebe you washed your own. “I’d want recording,” she said, with her back to them. “If it was my morning. I’d want somebody to have kept it.”

“So she’s—” Rusk stopped. He was holding his mug in both hands, and he was the youngest, and he did the arithmetic out loud that everyone older had done silently. “That was three hundred years ago. She’s dead. The dog, the kid whose stuff was on the line, whoever was in the house — everyone in that garden is dead. Everyone who ever knew them is dead. That’s — we watched—” His voice did something and he took it back under control, nineteen and furious about it. “What did we watch?”

The oven door went shut, iron on iron.

“A woman getting her washing out early on a good drying day,” Piet said. “Doing it right, too. Sheets on the outside, smalls in where the neighbours can’t count them.” He wiped his hands, one finger at a time, deliberately. “Dead’s not the thing, lad. Everyone everywhere mostly is, and always has been; that’s not news, that’s arithmetic. It didn’t stop her hanging the washing.” He turned back to his dough. “Didn’t stop her getting the good of the morning. Nor the dog.”

“But she doesn’t know we—”

“No,” said Della, from the doorway, and the table settled, because the Master had been quiet for an hour and the quiet had sat in the room like a list in the deck. “She doesn’t. Nothing in thirty years of notices says either way, and I’ll tell you what I hold to: she was not performing for us. That’s everything you saw — a morning nobody thought was worth watching, being worth watching. You’ll want to write it down, Mr. Rusk. Not the log. Your own book. Tonight, while you’re still angry. You’ll want it exact when you’re my age.”

Della took her tea standing. In her cabin afterwards, off-watch and off the record, Della Withy sat on her bunk with her hands around the cooling mug for a long time. The garden had been nothing like anywhere she had ever lived. That wanted saying clearly, to herself, in her own head, in her own Master’s-log voice, because the ache under her sternum was making a case that it had been her grandmother’s yard, and it had not been, her grandmother’s yard had been dust-brick and a wire fence and a different hemisphere of a different world, and the ache did not care. The ache had simply recognised the category. A woman. A morning. A line of washing meaning: children, weather coming, order kept against the odds. Somebody’s. Not hers. Somebody’s.

Day eight ran quiet, in the way of a house after a funeral, everyone considerate and nothing quite level. The margin was still abeam — would be abeam another day yet, that was the geometry of the outside passage — and the crew of the Grebe did their watches and ate their meals and did not stand at the ports, except that at the end of the second dog watch Della came up the passage and found Piet at the port-side glass in the dark of the companionway, tea towel over his shoulder, looking out at the hatched grey the way you’d look at a door somebody had gone through. She stopped. He didn’t startle; cooks hear everything.

“I know,” Piet said, to the glass.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were going to.” He gave the grey another moment, and then he came away from the port and went back down to his galley, and the two of them never mentioned it, and the rule stood, and Della put it in no log anywhere, on the grounds that the oldest hand aboard was entitled to one long look at the place where mornings came from.

The report went in from the junction on day nine, because there was a form, and the form was called a W-6, and the existence of the form was itself a kind of information that Della let the crew sit with: enough boats had seen enough somethings that the authority had stationery for it.

The W-6 was one page and it wanted observables. It said so at the head, in the driest sentence Della had ever admired: Record what instruments and persons observed. No interpretation is invited. And so the five of them, around the galley table on the last night of the leg, with Piet’s bread and the good jam because Piet had ruled it a good-jam occasion, compiled between them, for the authority’s files, in the authority’s boxes, the following: duration, nine minutes (master), see attached chronometry discrepancy; extent, indeterminate (angular, nine degrees); no range return; contents of image, residential structure, garden, rotary drying line; washing, approx. nine items, sheets and mixed household; one dog, breed unestablished, brown; one woman, adult, jumper, basket; one child, age est. 7–9, running; weather within image, fine, light wind; sound, none; interaction, none.

The drafting took two hours, because observables are harder than they sound. Rusk fought for good dog and was overruled — “Good is not an observable, Mr. Rusk,” Della said, pen level, “however true” — and fought for happy, of the woman, and was overruled again, and won, at last, on a technicality that Eme constructed for him like a wire splice, the single word unhurried, which the table agreed described the observable rate of pegging and would carry, to any reader with blood in them, everything the boy actually meant. Piet contributed one line and stood over it until it went in as spoken: washing competently hung. The authority could make of that what the authority liked.

Interaction, none. Rusk read the finished form over twice and looked up.

“It doesn’t ask how it felt.”

“No,” Della said, signing it. “It doesn’t dare.”

The acknowledgment caught up with the Grebe five weeks later, two legs down the schedule, in the ordinary mail: a receipt slip, a reference number, and one line of catalogue text — LAYER, RESIDENTIAL, TERRESTRIAL-TYPE, EST. MID-21ST C., UNLOCATED. OBSERVATIONS FILED. — which the crew passed around the galley table in silence, because there she was, the woman, the dog, the good drying day, the whole standing morning of her, gone into the record of the age as one line and a number.

Piet pinned the slip to the galley board, between the port-fees notice and the rota, where it stayed.

At the junction, between legs, Della took an afternoon and a tram out to the settlement rows and sat for an hour with old Master Corliss, who was ninety-one and living with his daughter and down to one working eye, and who listened to all of it — she told it plainly, in order, the clock first, the way he’d taught her to give a report — without once interrupting, his tea untouched, his face doing nothing a stranger could have read.

“Wide arc?” he said, when she’d finished.

“Wide arc the whole way.”

“Recorders sealed?”

“Sealed and lodged.”

Corliss nodded, slowly, twice, and looked out his daughter’s window at the settlement row’s strip of manufactured sky, and was quiet long enough that Della wondered if he’d gone where he sometimes went now. Then he said: “Nineteen years I ran that leg before you, and it never once showed me a thing. I used to stand the third watch on the outside passage and half hope.” His one eye came back to her, perfectly clear. “Don’t tell my daughter that. She thinks I hoped for quiet runs.” He got his tea at last, both hands. “A washing day. Well. It would be, wouldn’t it. All that, out there, all those years —” he stopped, and made the small gesture that had always, on the old man, stood for the entire unsayable remainder — “and when it finally opens its hand for nine minutes, it’s a woman getting the sheets out while the sun’s on. Course it is.”

Tave never adjusted the aft chronometer. The rate came back to true by itself, over the weeks, the way it had gone out — no cause found, none looked for — but the reading kept the six seconds it had gathered on the outside passage, because Tave declined to take them off, and corrected for them in his head every watch after, and if anybody new asked why the aft clock ran six seconds slow, the answer they got, from anyone on the crew, in the tone you’d use for the mass of a full lighter, was: it’s right. It’s just right about somewhere else.

Rusk wrote it in his own book that first night, as ordered, angry, exact — and then, at the junction, did a thing he could not have explained under questioning: paid the counter fee to copy the catalogue line, and mailed the copy home to his mother on Brightfall with three sentences of his own, the longest of which was I saw the best thing I will ever see and it was somebody hanging out sheets. His mother put it under a magnet on the cold-store door, where her own washing list went.

And the Grebe went back out, on the schedule, the next leg and the leg after, tow astern, bread rising, laundry strung in the warm alley behind the heat exchangers. On the outside passage the crew kept the wide arc and their manners, the way they always had, and nobody stood at the ports, and the hatched grey stayed grey the whole way round, and at the end of the third watch Della Withy wrote the leg’s log line in her own steady hand, the same line all the way down the page:
