A captain who brings a ship home five years late does not get that ship back. The Endurance is spent — given over to the line she helped hold, a proof-object and a power-core, never a fighting hull again. In her place: the Longwake, a new Aurora-class explorer, near-flawless and freshly worked-up, handed to a man who would rather have the wreck he trusted.

The thing the register can’t enter
The Longwake can do things the Endurance never could. Her instruments are better. Her hull is sound where the old ship was scar-tissue and improvisation. By every measure on this page she is the superior vessel, and her crew resent needing her, and her captain hates that she is perfect — because perfect is what you are issued when the thing you trusted is gone, and a better ship in a worse war is not a comfort, it is a reminder.
Held off the formal record, from the new captain: “She’s everything the old girl wasn’t. I’d trade her back in a heartbeat. None of this makes me feel safer — it just makes the instruments better at telling me why I shouldn’t.”
In The Dimming, the Longwake is the line that works — the new hull, the good instruments, the watch held — right up to the moment the line is asked to be enough, and learns that it isn’t.
