Cairn Relay — General Arrangement & Load Return

A cairn is what a surveyor leaves at the last waymark before the dark: a navigation marker, a warning to whoever follows, and — assembled stone by stone, usually after somebody has died — a memorial. The crews shortened Cairn Relay to the Cairn almost immediately, and the name outlasted the job. It was commissioned to hold one thing: the authenticated state of a route. Look at what it ended up holding.
