The quiet episodes are the ones that stay with you

The scene from Deep Space Nine that comes back to me most isn't a battle. It's Sisko at his dad's restaurant in New Orleans.

Joseph Sisko runs that kitchen like a starship. His grown son commands a station on the edge of a war, and the whole quadrant is on fire somewhere off past the gumbo, and none of that matters in there. In that kitchen Ben is still just somebody's son, getting told what to do by his father.

That's the sci-fi I love most and see least. The future as a place people actually live in. Somebody's dad still cooks. Somebody's kid still won't eat the green stuff. The starship is on the telly in the background with the sound off, and nobody's watching it.

Babylon 5 had it with G'Kar and Londo, two old enemies stuck with each other. Battlestar had it in Adama and Roslin's quiet moments between jumps. It's also the thing I chase hardest in my own books: the ship is furniture, the people are the story.

So: what's the quiet episode or scene that wrecked you? Any show, any book. Not the big finale, the small one. The one where nothing exploded and you still had to sit there for a minute after it finished.
